Michael J. Dowling

Michael J. Dowling, CEO Emeritus of Northwell Health since October 1st, is widely recognized as an influential healthcare voice. In his advisory capacity, he champions public health initiatives and dedicates time to teaching and writing. His distinguished career is marked by prestigious accolades, including an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad, an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and the recent Carnegie Hall Medal of Excellence, amongst others.

Dowling was included in TIME’s 2025 “100 Most Influential People in Global Health,” ranked first on Modern Healthcare’s 2022 “100 Most Influential,” and received the Deming Cup from Columbia Business School. Before transitioning to Emeritus, he served as Northwell’s first President and CEO for over 23 transformative years, leading its exponential growth and innovation. His public service includes senior roles in New York State government, such as deputy secretary to Governor Mario Cuomo and commissioner of social services, as well as serving as a professor and assistant dean at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service. Additionally, he is the former chair of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, served as Grand Marshal of the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and has authored multiple works reflecting his insights into healthcare and leadership.
