Steven Freiberg

Steven Freiberg has extensive experience in financial services across a career that has spanned almost 40 years. He is Chair of Rewards Network, a TowerBrook portfolio company.

Mr. Freiberg is also Vice Chair of SoFi, the largest US-based Fintec, Chair of Fair Square, a near prime bankcard business, Chair of SPAC Portage Fintech Acquisition and Founder of Grand Vista Partners. He serves on the Boards of Mastercard, Regional Management and Purchasing Power. In addition, he is a Senior Advisor to the Boston Consulting Group and Verisk Analytics, a big data analytics company. Mr. Freiberg recently served as Chair and CEO of Etrade, the online brokerage company. At Etrade over a three-year period he addressed a number of significant challenges that occurred prior to his 2010 arrival that were mainly a result of credit crisis related issues. The issues included chronic financial losses, balance sheet risk profile, regulatory transition and competitors unaffected by residual credit crisis issues. Under his leadership the company returned to profitability, the balance sheet risk profile was largely remediated, and the core franchise’s new customer and asset growth accelerated to rival the top competitor. Previously, Mr. Freiberg served as the Co-Chair and CEO of Citigroup’s Global Consumer Group having been with Citigroup for a period of 30 years and having held a number of senior positions. As Co-Chair and CEO of Citigroup’s Global Consumer Group, Mr. Freiberg was responsible for all business lines serving consumer and commercial customers. The franchise spanned 53 countries, 230 thousand employees, a $1 trillion managed balance sheet and $12 billion of after tax earnings. Significant business lines included Card Products, Retail and Commercial Banking, Mortgage & Home Equity, Wealth Management, Student and Auto lending. In a prior period, Mr. Freiberg led the turnaround of the North American Bankcard Division, increasing profits over a seven-year period from $400 million to $4 billion. Earlier in his career he served as the Bankcard Division’s CFO and head of Decision Sciences. In addition, he spent a significant period of his career developing and leading investment and insurance efforts, serving as the Chair and CEO of Citi’s North American Investment Products Division with full line responsibility for all investment and insurance products spanning the Corporate, Consumer, Commercial and Investment Bank. Finally, he served as a member of Citi’s Management, Operating and Executive Committees as well as a Board Member of Citi’s Foundation. Mr. Freiberg previously served as the Co-Chair of Habitat for Humanity’s NYC Council and the Board of Trustees for March of Dimes.
